The real reason I ride a bike... OK,
I admit it, you're looking at the reason I have to ride a bike. Donut
King, at the corner of Jefferson & Alameda, in Redwood City. The
coffee's OK, but the doughnuts are extraordinary. None of that greasy
taste that makes you wonder what you're doing to your arteries, and the
chocolate...well, this is the real thing, not that waxy stuff you normally
associate with doughnuts.
So what does this have to do with riding a bike? Simple. If
I'm going to eat doughnuts, then I've got to do something to keep from
gaining weight. The worst, of course, is that feeling you get when
you bend over and there's that "flop" feeling as part of your
stomach rolls over your belt. Well, OK, you might not be able to
completely get rid of that feeling (especially if you discover Donut
King!), but at least riding a bike will keep it from happening until
you're bent over at a bit more of an angle.
But I am serious...this place has the best doughnuts I've found anywhere.
[Please note that Donut King is no
longer a regular part of my diet. The donuts, if anything, have improved in
taste over the years, and their coffee is reasonable and good. But I've
learned the unfortunate truth that "riding to eat" isn't compatible with
keeping my weight down to reasonable levels. The awful truth is that, as we
get older, our bodies get more efficient... meaning that we require less
food per day than we used to. You'd think being more efficient that way
would mean that we could climb faster, but it doesn't seem to work that way.

You were so right about the chocolate donuts.
The old fashioned chocolate are my
favorite. I bought two dozen, but only 20 made it to work - they
must have miscounted when the filled the box, yeah that's it :)
